Hi, I’m Chris Lonsdale, author of The Third Ear, co-founder of Third Ear Publishing, which is the company that produces the rhythmic language series, and also the Kung-Fu English series in China, which is one of the top grossing apps in Apple’s App Store in China.
This Third Ear podcast series is designed to help you resolve all of the challenges and issues that you might be facing as you’re learning a second language. The ideas and techniques that I’m going to share with you in this series will help you resolve a lot of problems, help you learn a second language very quickly on your own, to the point that you might even be fluent in as little as six months.
Hi, today I want to talk about goal setting, and an interesting phenomenon which is people very often set goals that are far too low. Now let me explain what I mean. A few years ago a young Australian man came to me, and I’d just published The Third Ear: You Can Learn Any Language, and so he came to me and he wanted to know what he should do to learn Mandarin. Should he go to Beijing, should he go to Taiwan? And the first thing I asked him was “well, what’s your goal?” And he said “well it’s to have a simple conversation with people in Chinese.” And I told him that that goal was far too simple, far too low and unchallenging, because his unconscious knew that he could learn that in about two weeks. So there was no challenge, no interest, there was no point going to Beijing or anywhere else to learn Mandarin for that sort of a goal. So we talked about it, and after a short time he set a new goal, which was to be able to get Chinese girls to laugh at his jokes in Chinese. And that goal really got him quite excited, he took The Third Ear, and he used all of the ideas and techniques in the book, and in six months he was fluent in Mandarin and within about a year, he could actually read and write to the level of being able to review Chinese contracts. Today he’s able to manage a team of people in China, completely in Chinese.
For myself, when I came to China, I set myself a goal to be as fluent as a native Chinese, and began to work with all of the techniques that I knew from psychology and brain science, and within six months my Chinese was at about the level it is today. When I came to Hong Kong I used the same approach, set myself a goal; to be able to be as fluent as the locals, and it took about four months to get to a very, very advanced level in Cantonese. So a really fundamental and important idea is your goal must be worthy of you, it must be set high enough to be exciting, to be challenging, and when you use the appropriate brain friendly techniques to learn, in the context of a solidly high goal, then you’ll be absolutely amazed at the sort of outcomes that you can get. So, set a high goal, use the right techniques, and be amazed at just how good your language can get.
